Dr. Shams Ali Baig, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences Presented His Research Findings in 7th SACOSAN Conference

Dr. Shams Ali Baig, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences (AWKUM) presented a research paper in the 7th South Asian Conference on Sanitation (SACOSAN) at Serena Hotel Islamabad. The conference was jointly organized by SACOSAN secretariat, UNICEF and Ministry of Climate Change (Pakistan). Researchers, Practitioners and Government Representatives from all the South Asian Countries attended the conference and share findings and progresses in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.

Dr. Shams’ research focusses on the investigation of sanitation-related pathogens in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs). Generally, centralized drinking water distribution networks are the sign of improved and sustainable approach to transport potable water from water source to consumer points. But the corrosion deposits in decade-old DWDSs act as a sink for many toxic pollutants and pathogens. Release of such toxic substances may increase the risk of water borne diseases and become an emerging public health issue. Thus, it is very important to investigate the concurrent corrosion situation in DWDSs across the country and to adopt applied corrosion preventive and management practices.
